[2017-01-21 – 2017-01-25]
From Vienna to Puchberg am Schneeberg.
On the way to the real alps. Coldest Janurary since 30 years in Austria gave me perfect conditions at the start of my tour (see kurier.at)
Start in vienna. I learned two things today:
- Drawing a gps track at home is easier then carrying a backpack with 20 kg
REstday, RElax, REpair, REview, REplan:
REstday because I carried my backpack with ski for about 55 km the last two days. 3 km by ski only. So I need RElaxing.
REpairing my sticks was necessary. Now I go on with a combination with a nordic walking stick.
REview of some new equipment.
Garmin Gpsmap 64s: does its job very well. Can be maintained perfectly with gloves. Unfortunately wireless transmission of new tracks is not possible from android devices.
REplanning: next accomondation is closed. So I neede to replan my route also.
Day of change. Changed from walking to skiing. Changed between up and downhill 8 times. Changed to funny part.
Passed pottenstein and muggendorf today!
Went from mariahilfberg via öhler hut to puchberg am schneeberg. Ongoing repairs: yesterday I bent again my stick and bought new shoestrings. Today I lost a screw from my ski boots …
[2017-01-26 – 2017-02-01]
From Puchberg am Schneeberg to Eisenerz.
Traversing the first mountains: Schneeberg, Waxriegel, Veitsch, Hochschwab.
Went from puchberg via Waxriegel to hochschneeberg (2076 m). Ski down to Weichtal hut.
Went from Weichtal hut via Kesselgraben, Gloggnitzer hut to Scheibwaldhöhe and down via Habsburg hut, Zikafahnlgraben, Kaisersteig, Naßkamm to Altenberg an der Rax. Started half past 6 with headlamp, perfect and fast access to Scheibwaldhöhe, exciting descent via Kaisersteig. At the end hard access to Naßkamm in deep snow without any trace. After starting in Vienna and almost one week in Niederösterreich I reached the Steiermark today.
Went from Altenberg an der Rax to Neuberg an der Mürz to be in the pole position for the long Veitsch traverse on Sunday.
I have been asked „isn’t it dangerous?“ several times. Looking back at the first week I remember two dangerous situations: Both of them at the first day. 20 minutes after starting from railway station I was asked for some money when walking through a shady alley by a shady guy!
Two hours later my track goes through a park which I entered through an opened gate. After 10 minutes of walking I reached the end of the park but I found closed gates only. After checking three gates I decided to climb over the two meter gate. Of course with my backpack with ski on it. At the top of the gate my trousers got stuck on the gate. In parallel my skis hit an electric cable above the gate. It was a mixture between a serious and a funny situation.
Of course the typical dangerous situations are due to avalanches. The first week I had perfekt conditions. Lowest risk of avalanches, powder up to the valleys, cold temperatures and sun for most of the time.
So I’m looking forward for tomorrow:
Traverse of Veitschalpe. From Neuberg an der Mürz, Veitschbachtörl, Grundbauernhütte, Veitschalpe, Gingatzwiese, Aschbach to Gollrad.
Starting the 3 day traverse of the Hochschwab. From Gollrad via Staritzen to the unguarded Schiestlhaus.
Via Hochschwab to Sonnschienhütte.
From Sonnschienhütte via Fobistörl to Eisenerz.
[2017-02-02 – 2017-02-09] + some additional days on a round trip
From Eisenerz to Öblarn.
Traversing the Niedere Tauern … a calm region of the alps.
Simone joined. From Eisenerz to Ramsau.
Ramsau, Kragelschinken, Zeiritzkampel to Wald am Schoberpass.
Wald am Schoberpass, Großer Schober, Himmeleck, Bergerhube (Hintertriebental)
A sad start: Simone needs to go home. So I leave the Bergerhube alone via Krugtörl and Gaaler törl to Bruckenhauser in St. Johann am tauern.
I will try to have my second rest day. Let’s hope the wheather is as bad as promised. Hmm. The wheather was bad but restdays are not one of my special disciplines. So I went via Klackalm to Bretstein.
Went from Bretstein via Kreuzkogel, Kreuzberg, Donnersbachwald to Mörsbach hut. Need to replan the trip a little bit due to strong wind from north and avalanche risk in south slopes. Distance of 41 km today. I’m getting tired to make distance ….
I really did it! My second rest day.
Went from Mörsbach hut to Lämmertörlkopf. Then via Stadelfirst into the Walchental down to Öblarn.
[2017-02-10 extra trip]
I take the weekend off with Alex in Sölktal. Of course I went there by ski. The days alone are quite hard for me. No one sharse the fun of a powder trip. So I thought to give up the trip. Let’s see what happens until sunday … Today I went from Öblarn via Schupfenalm, Schönwetterberg, Zinken, Auerloch into the Sölktal.
[2017-02-11 extra trip]
THE SPIRIT IS BACK! Thanks to Alex and Philipp who joined spontanously. The motivation team did their job perfectly. We did a nice trip from Sölktal to Gaßeneck.
[2017-02-12 extra trip]
Went with Alex and Philipp from Großsölk, Koller via Schönwetterhütte to Gumpeneck.
[2017-02-12 – 2017-02-19] + some rest days
From Öblarn to Maria Alm.
Dachstein, Tennengebirge, Steinernes Meer. Typical mountains of the northern Kalkalpen. Great ambiente, steep mountains.
At the afternoon I went back to my original route from Öblarn to Stoderhütte.
Went from Stoderhütte to Dachstein and down to Simonyhütte. Quite a long trip. Very wavy surface … went 20 m up, 10 down. But fantastic view. Reached top of dachstein in late afternoon. After two weeks in the Steiermark, I reached Oberösterreich now.
Ski down from Simonyhütte via Hoher Trog, Hoßwandscharte, Hinterer Gosausee to Gosausee. Fantastic landscape.
Went from ski area Gosausee to the cross-country trails from Lungötz and via the Lämmertal to the Heinrich-Hackl hut where I met Nickl.
After some days in the Dachstein area, crossing a ski area is awful. Skating downwards the cross-country trails was funny and entering the Tennengebirge at the evening was nice again.
Great traverse of the Tennengebirge. From Heinrich-Hackl hut via Tauernscharte, Schartwand , Wenger Scharte to Mittleres Streitmandl and down the steep valee in the north of the Fieberhörner to Pfarrwerfen.
Went with Mike from Pfarrwerfen to Ostpreußenhütte.
Went with Mike from Ostpreußenhütte via upper Blünbachtal, near Eckberthütte to Brandhorn. Then via Hochbrunnsulzenscharte and Totes Weib to Kärlingerhaus. We reached Bavaria!
Hard day! We need to go up around 2000 m in fresh snow of about 25 cm.
Went with Mike from Kärlingerhaus via Totes Weib and Buchauer Scharte down to Maria Alm. We passed the Funtensee in the early morning. I was really interrested to be at the coldest place of Germany. When we went down the 25 m from Kärlingerhaus to the Funtensee I was really interrested to leave this place. Minus 28,5 °C!
Have a look at Mikes Photoalbum also.
[2017-02-20] … [2017-02-22]
Rest days. Need to repair running surface of my ski, ski shoes, binding strap and it was really neccessary to wash all my clothes.
[2017-02-23 – 2017-03-04] + some rest days
From Maria Alm to Steinach am Brenner.
The typical winter tour area: Kitzbühler and Tuxer alps.
Went from Maria Alm via Schwalbenwand to Zell am See with Matthias.
Really hot temperatures. Snow was bad therefore. May be 50° more compared to Funtensee. Destroyed my new climbing skin … repairs goes on.
Went from Zell am See via Schmittenhöhe ski area to Pinzgauer hut with Matthias. We planned the Pinzgauer walk to Jochberg but due to fog, snowfall, wind and dropping temperatures I convinced Matthias to stop at the Pinzgauer hut. Thanks to Mike for the hint.
Yesterday the host of Haus Wilhelmina repaired my torn climbing skin perfectly.
I forgott to mention one experience of yesterday: when walking down the street from Mitterberghof to Thumersbach a rottweiler dog bit a piece of cork out of my stick. I really love dogs bit I hate these fighting dogs!
Did the Pinzgauer walk from Pinzgauer hut to Jochberg with Matthias.
We simply expect 15 cm of fresh powder and sun tomorrow. Of course in a completely untouched area.
All expectations met …
Went from Jochberg to Aschau. We had breakfast at Wagstättalm and went on to point 1903 m in the south of Pengelstein where Matthias and my way split after four days.
Went from Oberlandhütte via Hintenkarscharte to Steinberghaus with Ralf. It’s the first time that I can write this blog when sitting in the sun.
But back to the trip. Ralf arrived yesterday and I spent the second night in a VW bus. We started early because of the high temperatures and arrived with ski at Steinberghaus around 1 pm.
Some impressions of the hard life when doing a transalp in winter …
Went from Steinberghaus to Bamberger hut via Kröndelhorn very early due to bad weather arriving about lunch time. Ralf went back the way from yesterday to Oberlandhütte.
I reached Kröndelhorn at 11 am. There was no fog but no contours. Once I felt over because my sense of balance was disturbed. I triggered two small avalanches on the east side of the Kröndelhorn. I was above the slopes, so I was safe, but nature gave me a warning signal to be carefully.
Went from Bamberger hut via Schafsiedel, Erla-Brennhütte, Niederjochkogel to Stumm in Zillertal. Powder and high heels walking.
The best slopes so far followed when skiing down from Schafsiedel to Erla-Brennhütte … 30 cm powder.
I had to ski down some forest roads. Due to untouched sticky snow I need to switch to walking mode even downwards. After two steps I had 10 cm of snow between the boots and the ski. Thats what I called high heels walking before.
Unfortunately Tannenalm was booked completely. But the friendly team helped me to find a hotel in Stumm.
Started at 4:30 at Stumm, 5:00 on the ski slopes of Kaltenbach. Arrived before the skiing people at Wedelhut where I had an absolutely perfect breakfast. On the way to Pfundsjoch there was partly fog. Then down to Hagelhütte where I considered to stop the trip and go down into the valley. But then the fog went away and I could go on via Nafingköpfljoch to Weidener hut.
Thomas, the host of the Weidener hut served me the complete menu twice … and of course I ate it twice.
Went from Weidener hut via Krovenzjoch, Lager Lizum, Klammjoch, Peeralm to Navis, Eppensteiner.
I checked in in the well known Eppensteiner in Navis. After two sauna trips, some beers with the brother in law from Sigi, the host of Eppensteiner, who was on Tournee with Marianne and Michael already, a fall asleep.
Replanned stage 37 via Sunntiger and Bendlstein even if it looked absolutely impressive from Navis. Walked down some hikeing tracks down to Steinach am Brenner. Even this was an adventure because of the heavy storm in Wipptal. Reached Brenner highway … another milestone at this transalp.
[2017-03-05] … [2017-03-09]
I’m too fast compared to my plan. I need to wait for accompanying friends to access the stubaier alps. Furthermore I need to repair my ski shoes which could not be fixed for skiing down any more, my head lamp charging adapter got broken, my skis need to be waxed … so I will take some days off.
[2017-03-04 .. 2017-03-21]
Went from Steinach am Brenner to Scuol in Swizzerland, crossing Stubaier, Ötztaler and Sesvenna group.
[2017-03-05 … 09]
Rest days and climbing days @home.
[2017-03-10 – extra tour]
Due to high avalanche risk, we did a very safe tour from Gries am Brenner to Sattelberg with Roland, Biorni, Steddy.
Went from Steinach am Brenner into the upper Gschnitz valley to Alfaierhof.
[2017-03-11- extra tour]
Went from Trins via Trunahütte to Leitner Berg.
Went with Sven to Bremer hut.
Went from Bremer hut via Nürnberger Scharte to the Östlicher Feuerstein and down to Nürnberger hut.
Went from Nürnberger hut via Freiger Scharte to Italy. Then via Ebenerferner to Schwarzwandscharte and finally via Windachscharte back to Austria to the nice winter room of the Siegerland hut.
Went down to Sölden from Siegerland hut.
[2017-03-16 … 19]
Again time for some days off …
[2017-03-16 – extra tour – Hoher Sonnblick from Kolm-Saigurn]
[2017-03-17 – extra tour – Hocharn from Kolm-Saigurn]
Went from Sölden to Bodenegg via Gaislachalm. Start at 5 pm. Ernst and Georg joined.
Went from Bodenegg to Hochjoch Hospiz via Vent. Breakfast at 8 am at Rofenhöfe. Almost no snow on the way to Hochjoch Hospiz.
Went from Hochjoch Hospiz to Burgeis via Hintereisjoch and Matscher Joch.
I left Austria after 2 month and around 1000 km distance.
I passed exiting regions like Hochschwab, Dachstein, Steinernes Meer, Stubaier and Ötztaler alps. I got to know Gösser, Murauer, Puntigamer, Stiegel, Zillertaler and Zipfer beer. Unfortunately I left austria with a spoiled stomach which made the monotonous access to the Hintereisjoch via the Hintereis glacier even harder.
Went from Burgeis to Scoul via Schlinig, Sesvenna hut, Sesvennascharte and S-Charl. Reached Swizzerland.
